Mastering Mil-Spec Dowel Pins: Fit, Material, and Series Made Simple

Precision Dowel Pins at MF Supply

Mil-Spec (Military Standard) dowel pins are precision-ground, solid headless fasteners engineered for exact alignment, location, and secure assembly of components in aerospace, defense, and precision manufacturing.

They are produced under strict Mil-Spec specifications to ensure dimensional accuracy, repeatability, and conformance.  Unlike commercial pins, Mil-Spec versions must be tested and certified for mechanical properties, hardness, and finish supported by documentation packages that may include Material Test Reports (MTRs), Certificates of Conformance (COCs), Heat Treat Certifications and DFARs compliance statements.

Dowel pins are commonly used as hinges, shafts, pivots, or locating devices to align or secure parts within precision assemblies or fixtures.

Not all dowel pins are created equal. Each Mil-Spec series follows strict guidelines for fit, tolerance, material and other attributes to ensure accuracy and repeatability in demanding applications. Whether double-chamfered or featuring a radius and chamfer combination, these pins play a vital role in precision alignment. Mil-Spec Socket Cap Screws: A Complete Buyer’s Guide

When it comes to aerospace, defense, and mission-critical industrial applications, not all socket cap screws are created equal. While commercial socket cap screws can be sufficient for general manufacturing, Mil-Spec socket cap screws are engineered, tested, and certified to meet the stringent requirements of the U.S. military and defense supply chain.

In this guide, we’ll cover:

  • The variations of Mil-Spec socket cap screws
  • Materials, platings, and optional features
  • The part number taxonomy (MS, NAS, NASM, AN designations)
  • How Mil-Spec differs from commercial socket caps
  • Typical applications and industries
  • MF Supply’s Mil-Spec socket cap screw catalog offerings

Mil-Spec socket cap screws (sometimes called MS or NAS socket head cap screws) come in multiple variations to meet specific performance requirements: The 2 main Mil-Spec standards are:

  • Standard socket head cap screws – Cylindrical head, hexagonal drive. Designed for high-strength fastening where space is limited.
  • Flat socket cap screws – Used in clearance-sensitive applications where flush mounting is critical.

Note: Low Head and Button Head socket cap screws do not have a Mil-Spec equivalent.

Mil-Spec socket head cap screws come in several varieties, including:

  • Drilled heads (safety wire holes) – Feature cross-drilled holes in the head to allow safety wiring, preventing loosening in high-vibration environments like aircraft engines.
  • Thread-locking (pre-applied patch) – Includes a nylon or chemical locking element on the threads, providing resistance to vibration loosening.
  • Vent/drilled-through screws – Designed to eliminate trapped gas or contamination in vacuum or cleanroom environments.

Note: Varieties including threadlocking, drilled heads and vented options are less common and may only be available per special order with minimums and lead times.

Mil-Spec socket cap screws are offered in specific materials and platings with mechanical properties that meet or exceed ASTM/SAE standards. Common options include:

  • Alloy Steel – High tensile strength, black oxide or cadmium plated for corrosion resistance
  • CRES Stainless Steel (18-8/300 series stainless steel) – Corrosion resistance, often used in aerospace and marine environments
  • CRES A286 Stainless Steel superalloy – Extreme temperature resistance, high strength and with excellent corrosion & oxidation resistance

Note: SS316 stainless steel is less common and may only be available by special order with minimums and lead times.

Platings and Coatings:

  • Black Oxide (MIL-C-13924, Class 1) Standard corrosion resistance
  • Cadmium Plating (QQ-P-416) – Excellent corrosion resistance and lubricity. Widely specified in legacy Mil-Spec standards.
  • Passivation (for stainless steels, QQ-P-35) – Removes surface contaminants and improves corrosion resistance.

Military grade fasteners or “Mil-Spec” fasteners are usually designated by an AN, MS, NAS or NASM prefix followed by a part number.  Each of these prefixes is an abbreviation: NAS stands for National Aerospace Standard and MS stands for Military Standard.

The Defense Supply Center Philadelphia (DSCP), part of the DLA (Defense Logistics Agency), has a Qualified Suppliers List for Manufacturers (QSLM) identifying pre-qualified sources for certain products purchased by DSCP. Referred to also as the QPL (Qualified Products List), manufacturers on this list are recognized by DSCP as meeting all necessary criteria, particularly regarding quality control and paperwork.

Each part number defines key parameters: head style, material, finish, thread class, and whether features like drilled heads or locking elements are included.

The main core part numbers identifying standard Mil-Spec socket head cap screws are MS16995, MS16996, MS16997, MS16998, NAS1351, and NAS1352. Flat head socket head cap screws fall under parts MS24671 and MS24672.

  • MS (Military Standard) – Legacy part numbers (e.g., MS16995), still widely used in aerospace and defense
  • NAS (National Aerospace Standards) – High-performance standards developed for aerospace (e.g., NAS1351, NAS1352)
  • NASM – Updated versions of NAS standards under SAE governance
  • AN (Army-Navy) – Older standards, often superseded by MS or NAS numbers

The base part is followed by a Material Code:

  • “-” = Alloy Steel
  • “C” = Corrosion Resistance Steel (18-8 stainless steel)
  • “N” = Heat-Resistant Steel (A286)
  • Let’s further break down a common Mil-Spec socket cap:
  • For example: NAS1352N028, sometimes written as NAS1352N02-8
  •  2-56 X 1/2 Mil-Spec Socket Head Cap Screw A286 Stainless Steel DFAR
  • NAS1352 = Coarse thread Socket Head cap screw
  • N = Heat-Resistant Steel (A286)
  • 02 = 2-56 Diameter
  • 8 = .500 or 1/2 screw length

Note: The Aerospace Industries Association maintains an updated list of NAS parts available to members and/or for purchase.

Commercial socket caps may look identical to Mil-Spec socket caps.  However, commercial fasteners may lack the controlled processes, documentation, and certifications required for military or aerospace projects.

Differences between Mil-Spec and commercial socket head cap screws may include:

1. Certification & Paperwork

Available Paperwork may include:

  • Manufacturer’s Certificate of Conformance (C of C)
  • Lot and heat traceability
  • Dimensional testing
  • Material Test Reports (MTRs)
  • DFARS compliance certification for defense projects

2. Testing

Mil-Spec socket caps undergo rigorous mechanical, dimensional, and sometimes nondestructive testing to verify hardness, tensile strength, shear strength, plating thickness, and more.

3. Authorized Manufacturers

Manufacturers listed on the QPL (Qualified Products List), the Qualified Suppliers List for Manufacturers (QSLM), or those approved under aerospace quality systems (AS9100, NADCAP for plating, etc.) are authorized to produce Mil-Spec socket caps. This ensures supply chain integrity and reliability in defense applications.

Mil-Spec socket head cap screws are commonly used in:

  • Aerospace & Defense – Aircraft structures, engines, avionics, and ground support equipment
  • Military Vehicles & Marine – Tanks, ships, submarines, and defense electronics

Other industries use Mil-Spec fasteners because of their quality and traceability.  Two examples include Precision Manufacturing where vibration, temperature extremes, or strict compliance require certified fasteners, and Medical & High-Tech Industries where cleanrooms, vacuums, or corrosive environments require traceability is essential.

At MF Supply, we stock and source a broad catalog of Mil-Spec socket head cap screws including:

We partner with only qualified U.S. and global manufacturers and provide full certification packages upon request.

Beyond strength and performance, the real differentiators are the certifications, testing, and compliance requirements that ensure supply chain integrity.

Carbon Steel Key-Locking Inserts (AKA Keenserts®) at www.mfsupply.com

MF Supply is an expert and industry leader when it comes to key-locking inserts, commonly known by the popular brand name Keensert®. We stock and source key-locking inserts in a wide variety of materials, platings and sizes, including Inch, Metric, Commercial and Mil-Spec options.

In today’s blog, we will showcase a comprehensive overview of Carbon Steel Key-Locking Inserts, covering their benefits, uses, styles, standards, sizes, and comparison with other key-locking inserts made from other materials — so you are all set before jumping off to procure them for your next project.

What are Carbon Steel Key-Locking Inserts?

Carbon Steel Key-Locking Inserts, often referred to in industry vernacular as Carbon Steel Keenserts®, are precision-engineered threaded inserts predominantly fabricated from high-grade carbon steel.

Featuring both internal and external threads, these inserts are adept at providing wear-resistant thread interfaces in substrates that are inherently susceptible to thread degradation or are insufficiently robust for the intended mechanical loads. The external threading of these inserts exhibits a larger diameter and pitch compared to the internal threads, ensuring a secure engagement with the parent material.

These components are specifically designed for thread reinforcement and repair applications across a broad spectrum of parent materials. Their key-locking mechanism involves the deployment of keys integrated into the insert body. Upon installation into a pre-tapped hole, these keys are driven outward into the parent material, thereby affording a secure mechanical lock that resists rotational and axial forces. Hence, this feature is pivotal in applications where vibrational loads or cyclic stresses are prevalent.

The versatility of Carbon Steel Key-Locking Inserts makes them beneficial for any sector requiring durable, reliable threaded connections, especially where materials are subject to wear, high stress, or require thread repair and reinforcement.

Carbon Steel Keenserts®, or Key-Locking Inserts, have different styles in order to cater to a wide range of application requirements and material conditions. The distinct styles are designed to address specific challenges such as load capacity, space constraints, installation requirements, and the physical properties of the base material. Below is a list of all the styles available for these Key-Locking Inserts:

      • Thin Wall | RKKA | KNM: These are used when minimal space is available or in applications where less material needs to be removed. They offer a good balance between strength and size. Available off the shelf in Internal Thread 10-24 through 1/2-20 and Metric M5-M12. Often referred to by their original Fairchild part numbers: RKKA
      • Heavy Duty | RKK | KNHM: Designed for higher strength and durability, these are suitable for applications subject to high stress or where a stronger thread is required. Available off the shelf in Internal Thread 8-32 through 1-1/2, and Metric M4-M24. Often referred to by their original Fairchild part numbers: RKK
      • Extra Heavy Duty | KNHXH: These inserts are used in extremely demanding applications where very high pull-out and torque resistance is needed. Available off the shelf in Internal Thread 6-32 through 1-12. No standard Metric option available. Often referred to by their original Fairchild part numbers: KNHXH
      • Solid | KNJ: Unlike other types have both internal and external thread, solid inserts have only external thread. Once installed, they can be drilled and tapped as required. These solid inserts can be used to relocate misplaced holes, customize the internal threads, or plug existing holes.  They are extremely durable but might require more installation space. Available off the shelf in External Thread 3/8-16 through 1-1/4 and Metric M8-M32. Often referred to by their original Fairchild part numbers: KNJ.

Commonly available in diameters from 6-32 through 1-1/2, Carbon Steel Key-Locking Inserts can be used in a wide range of applications from small electronics to heavy machinery. The thread pitch varies accordingly, with finer pitches for delicate applications and coarser pitches for heavy-duty applications.

Carbon Steel Key-locking inserts are generally offered as commercial parts, and don’t have a Mil-Spec equivalent. They come standard with a phosphate finish.

*Note – Carbon Steel Key-locking Inserts do not come with a Self-Locking option, which is a standard option with Stainless Steel Keenserts®.

      The Carbon Steel Difference!

How do Carbon Steel Key-Locking Inserts stack up against other materials? Here’s the breakdown:

      • Stainless Steel: Stainless Steel Keenserts® are known for their corrosion resistance, especially in marine and chemical environments. However, Carbon Steel Key-Locking Inserts are generally stronger and more wear-resistant, which is beneficial in applications where the primary concern is strength rather than exposure to corrosive elements.
      • 4140 Alloy Steel: This is a high-carbon alloy steel that provides excellent wear resistance and strength. While 440 Alloy Steel Keenserts® offer superior hardness, Carbon Steel Key-Locking Inserts typically excel in toughness and are more ductile, making them less likely to crack under high stress.
      • A286: A286 is an iron-nickel-chromium stainless steel alloy known for its high strength and corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures. Carbon Steel Key-Locking Inserts may not match the high-temperature performance but are significantly more cost-effective for applications where extreme temperatures are not a concern.
      • Nitronic 60: This material provides excellent galling and wear resistance. While it is superior in environments where these factors are critical, Carbon Steel Key-Locking Inserts offer a better balance of strength and cost-efficiency for general-purpose use.
      • Inconel: Known for its ability to withstand extreme temperatures and corrosion, Inconel is often used in high-temperature applications. Carbon Steel Key-Locking Inserts, on the other hand, are more widely used in applications where high temperature and corrosion are not as critical but where high strength and lower cost are important.

Hence, Carbon Steel Key-Locking Inserts offer an excellent balance of performance and value, making them a preferred choice for applications where the benefits of higher-cost, specialized materials are not required. They stand out for their strength, toughness, and cost-effectiveness, providing a reliable and affordable solution for thread reinforcement and repair.

      • Grade 8 Steel: Contains an even higher carbon content than Grade 5, offering superior strength and hardness. Commonly used in demanding applications like heavy machinery and military equipment. Ideal for applications where the bolt must withstand high stress or sudden impact without deforming.
      • Stainless Steel 18-8: Composed of approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel, hence the name 18-8. Offers excellent resistance to corrosion and oxidization. Widely used in environments where exposure to water, chemicals, or saline is common.
      • Stainless Steel A2: Similar to 18-8 stainless steel but with slight variances in the alloy composition. Common in food processing equipment and outdoor furniture. Resistant to corrosion and staining, making it ideal for aesthetic applications as well.
      • Stainless Steel A4: Also known as marine grade stainless steel. Contains higher levels of nickel and added molybdenum for enhanced corrosion resistance. Ideal for use in highly corrosive environments such as marine, coastal, and tropical climates.

      Finishes

The finish of a carriage bolt not only affects its appearance but also its functionality, especially in terms of corrosion resistance. Black Oxide and Black Zinc finishes offer a degree of corrosion resistance along with an aesthetically pleasing look. For environments with high moisture, Hot Dip Galvanized bolts are an excellent choice for their superior corrosion protection. Zinc-Plated and Zinc-Yellow finishes are also popular, offering a balance between corrosion resistance and affordability. Understanding these options is essential for selecting a bolt that not only fits the technical requirements but also withstands environmental conditions.

      Sizes Available

The size of a carriage bolt is also another critical factor in ensuring its effectiveness in a given application. The range of sizes available is extensive, from 6-32 through 7/8-9 for inch sizes to M5-0.8 through M12-1.75 for metric DIN 603 sizes. This broad spectrum of sizes accommodates everything from large-scale industrial needs to smaller, custom projects. Selecting the appropriate size is vital for the bolt’s performance, as it affects the strength of the joint and the overall integrity of the project.

Precision Dowel Pins for Manufacturers: A Comprehensive Guide

Considering Precision Dowel Pins for Your Next Project?

When you’re in the heart of the manufacturing industry, precision is not just a luxury; it’s a necessity. Components like dowel pins may seem small and inconsequential, but in this realm of precision manufacturing, they are paramount to ensuring accurate alignment and fit. Precision dowel pins, in particular, play an indispensable role in guaranteeing accurate alignment and secure fastening in a broad spectrum of applications. But with various tolerances, standards, materials, and sizes available, how do you make the right choice? It is important to know and understand these factors in order to make informed decisions that will meet your expectations & manufacturing needs.

      What are Precision Dowel Pins?

At their core, precision dowel pins are simple cylindrical rods. The term “precision” implies that these pins are manufactured to very tight tolerances in order to ensure accurate fit in assemblies. Tolerances refer to the acceptable variation in dimensions from the specified value. The tighter the tolerance, the less variation there is—meaning that their dimensions are incredibly accurate. This precision ensures that dowel pins fit snugly into corresponding holes in two components, ensuring their exact/accurate alignment.

      Standards & Tolerances

Several standards are followed in the production of precision dowel pins. The prevalent standard specifications come from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the Deutsche Industrie Norm (DIN), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and the Military Standard (MS/MIL-SPEC) of the United States. At a minimum, these standards specify the pin shape, and the diameter and length tolerance. These standards might also specify the pin hardness and surface finish. OEM branded dowel pins are handled separately and are addressed later in this blog.

ISO Standard: ISO 2338A & ISO 2338B (for unhardened pins) and ISO 8734 (for hardened pins) are common standards for dowel pins. Under these standards, precision dowel pins can be manufactured to either “M6” or “M5” tolerance classes, with “M6” being the more common of the two.

      • For example, an “M6” tolerance for a 5 mm dowel pin might have a diameter tolerance of -0.014 to 0 mm. So, the pin could be anywhere from 4.986 mm to 5 mm in diameter.

DIN Standard: DIN 7 (for unhardened, solid dowel pins) and DIN 6325 & DIN 6325H (hardened, solid dowel pins). Similar to ISO standards, the typical tolerance for precision dowel pins under DIN standards is designated as “M6.” This is the standard fit for dowel pins and ensures a tight fit that might require light pressing or can sometimes be hand-driven depending on the exact material and hole conditions.

      • For example, for a 5 mm dowel pin under the DIN 7 or DIN 6325 standard, the typical diameter tolerance might have and upper limit of 5.000 mm & a lower limit of 4.986 mm.

ANSI Standard: ANSI standard for dowel pins is ASME/ANSI B18.8.2. This standard defines sizes and tolerances for standard dowel pins, with the “Standard Series” being the most common.

      • For example, for a 1/4 (.25) inch interference fit diameter pin, the diameter tolerance might be +0.0002 to 0.000 inch. So, the pin diameter could be anywhere from 0.2500 inches to 0.2502 inches in diameter.

MIL-SPEC Standard: MIL-SPEC standard for dowel pins, particularly those conforming to MS16555 and MIL-P-21143 have very specific tolerances to ensure reliability and consistency in critical military and aerospace applications.

      • The MS16555 specifies a straight headless pin with a radius on one end and a chamfer on the other. The material can be Carbon or Alloy Steel or CRES 410 or 416 Stainless Steel. Available diameters range from 1/16 (.0626-.0628) through 1 inch (1.0003-1.0001). Lengths range from 3/16 to 6 inches long. Standard diameter tolerances are +.0002 over the nominal size.
      • The M21143 specifies a a straight headless pin made of CRES 303 Stainless Steel. The Mil-P-21143/1 series has a tolerance up to +.0002 over the nominal size. The M21143/2 series has tolerance of .0002 Under its nominal size.

      Material Choices

Different applications may require Precision dowel pins made from different materials. The most common materials in the market include:

      • Stainless Steel: Offers corrosion resistance and is suitable for applications exposed to moisture or corrosive substances.
      • Alloy Steel: Known for its strength and durability, it’s ideal for heavy-duty applications.
      • Brass: Often used when there’s a need to avoid sparking or in applications with lower strength requirements (less common).
      • Aluminum: Lightweight and resistant to corrosion, aluminum precision dowel pins are suitable for applications where weight is a concern (less common).

      Sizes Available

The diameter of precision dowel pins usually varies from 1/32″ to more than 1″, and their lengths span from 3/16″ to multiple inches. Hence, precision dowel pins come in a wide range of sizes, but certain sizes are more commonly used across various manufacturing applications due to their adaptability and compatibility with standard components. Selecting the appropriate size for your specific application is essential for achieving a snug fit, best performance, cost-effectiveness, and durability.

      OEM Branded Precision Dowel Pins

Precision Dowel Pins – OEM branded “Precision” dowel pins are manufactured by precision component brands such as Pic Design, WM Berg, Unicorp and others who have their own technical specifications and are not governed by DIN, ISO or ANSI / ASME standards. They are usually only offered in stainless steel through distributors of precision components.

      What to Consider Before Buying

      • Tolerance: Precision dowel pins have tight tolerances. Ensure that the pins you buy meet the specific tolerances required for your application.
      • Environment: Consider the environment in which the pins will be used. If they’ll be exposed to corrosive substances or high temperatures, material choice becomes crucial.
      • Custom Needs: If your application requires non-standard sizes or materials, you might need custom-made precision dowel pins.
      • Quantity: Depending on the scale of your manufacturing, you may need precision dowel pins in bulk. Purchasing in larger quantities often results in cost savings!
      • Supplier Reputation: Always source your precision dowel pins from reputable suppliers known for their quality and consistency.

Cotter Pin!? What the heck is that?

Welcome back to the next installment of our “what the heck is that” series, where we discuss some of the unique fasteners and electronic hardware that manufacturers use in the design and assembly of their products. This week, we are introducing you to our friend, the Cotter Pin!

Cotter Pins, AKA Split Pins, R Clips or R Pins, Hitch Pins or Hitch Clips, Safety Pins, Circle Cotters, Retaining Pins or Locking Pins, may not be the most renowned piece of hardware, yet they have been quietly holding together our world in more ways than you might imagine. For starters, these pins are non-threaded fasteners, which means that they do not have the risk of loosening due to vibrations as is the case in some screw or bolt connections. Furthermore, Cotter Pins are easy to install/remove and are inexpensive to produce—making them valuable & cost-effective components that guarantee the stability and functioning efficiency of numerous mechanisms across a variety of industries. Keep reading to learn more about these pins and to see if they would be a great fit for your next big project.

      What are Cotter Pins?

Cotter Pins are double-structured pins crafted from semi-round wires, that have a loop on one end that serves as a head. The completed component showcases one wire end extending past the other, ending with a chisel-like point.

At the most basic, cotter pins are fasteners that are used to secure various assemblies in place. Typically, they are shaped like a “T” or an “R”, and are inserted into holes that run through the parts to be connected. They are then split into two prongs at the opposite ends, which are then bent to prevent the pins from slipping out and to securely hold the assemblies together.

One key advantage of cotter pins is their inherent simplicity. With their straightforward design, they can be easily installed and detached without the necessity for any specific tools. Furthermore, they offer robust links that prevent the secured pieces from becoming loose or disassembled. When used with castle or slotted nuts, they become a safety locking device.

Another important benefit offered by cotter pins is their ease of removal, which enables swift disassembly or maintenance tasks. When the need arises to dismantle/disassemble components, cotter pins can be easily taken out by straightening or bending back their split ends to their original position. This feature simplifies repair or maintenance operations.

Cotter pins also allow for a certain degree of motion (pivot) depending on how they are installed. This is beneficial in applications like bicycle crank arms where you want the crank to remain secure while also allowing it to rotate.

      Who uses Cotter Pins?

Cotter Pins are widely used across a range of industries due to their simplicity, reliability, and versatility. The following are some primary industries where cotter pins are frequently employed:

      • Aerospace Industry: Cotter Pins play a vital role in the aerospace industry, where safety and reliability are paramount. They are used to secure critical components such as landing gear, engine parts, and control linkages, ensuring that they remain in position during flight. For example, control linkages encompass control surfaces such as ailerons, elevators, and rudder, as well as the cockpit controls, all of which have numerous pivot points requiring both security and mobility. Cotter Pins are perfectly suited for these uses.
      • Automotive Industry: In the automotive industry, cotter pins are utilized in various components, particularly in suspension systems, steering linkages, transmission linkages, wheel assembly, brake system, etc. They secure ball joints, tie rod ends, and other critical parts to ensure safe and reliable vehicle operation.

Cotter pins also find use in several components of tractors, including anchoring the joint connections in the steering mechanism, maintaining components in the transmission system, and fastening parts in the hydraulic systems.
      • Marine Industry: Within the marine industry, Cotter Pins are widely employed to secure clevis pins, turnbuckles, and various fittings in rigging systems and boat hardware. For instance, within marine engines, cotter pins are often used to secure various components and assemblies, such as linkages, connections, and valves. Offering a swift and secure fastening solution, these pins demonstrate reliability even in corrosive marine environments.
      • Military and Defense: In the military and defense industries, cotter pins are used to fasten components in weapons, vehicles, aircrafts, naval assets, and communication equipment. In addition, Cotter Pins are deployed in a wide array of other portable gear and systems utilized by military personnel in operational settings. These can encompass everything from temporary bridges and fortification structures.

Other industries that make use of Cotter Pins are: the Industrial and Machinery Industry, where Cotter Pins are used for securing components, such as pulleys, gears, and levers; the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Industry, where they are used to to fasten parts, such as bolts, nuts, and shafts; the Recreational and Sports Equipment Industry, where they secure various moving parts and components found in recreational equipment, such as bicycles, motorcycles, and sports gear; the Construction and Heavy Equipment Industry, where these pins are used for various applications, including securing hitch pins, linkages, and hydraulic connections; and the Furniture and Manufacturing Industry, where these pins are utilized to secure joints, hinges, and other components in conveyor systems, furniture assembly, and .

What standards, materials and sizes are available?

Materials: Cotter pins can be manufactured from different materials like steel, stainless steel, brass, and aluminum. Steel cotter pins are often enhanced with a zinc coating for added resistance to corrosion. Stainless steel pins are favored for their superior strength and corrosion resistance, particularly in harsh environments.

Sizes: Cotter pins come in a spectrum of sizes, generally ranging from 1/32″ to 3/4″ in diameter and 1/2″ to 6″ in length. The appropriate size is dictated by the application and the dimensions of the hole where the pin will be placed.

Standards: Various nations and regions adopt their own standards for cotter pins. Some of the most frequently used ones include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), British Standards (BS), Military Specification (Mil-Spec) Standard, and the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN).

      Commercial Standards include: ASME B18.8.1

      Mil-Spec standards include: MS9245

Are there other factors to consider?

YES!! The efficacy of cotter pins are greatly influenced by their proper installation and maintenance. The following list has crucial points to keep in mind.

      • Selection: Opt for cotter pins that fit into the hole securely without being overly tight. The length should be sufficient for the prongs to be bent appropriately without leaving excessive overhang.
      • Installation: During installation, ensure the prongs are split and bent sufficiently to secure the pins. Tools like pliers or a cotter pin puller can aid in the process of installation and removal.
      • Inspection: Regular checks on cotter pins are crucial, particularly in applications under high-stress or where safety is paramount. Look out for signs of wear, corrosion, or distortion, indicating potential need for replacement.
      • Replacement: When extracting cotter pins, it’s typically advised to substitute them with new ones, as the bending and straightening process can fatigue the metal, undermining their strength.
