Top 27 Socket Fastener Questions & Expert Answers: DFARS, Certifications & Hard-to-Find Parts (Part 4)

Welcome to the fourth installment of our Top Socket Fastener Questions & Expert Answers series.

In Parts 1–3, we covered socket fastener types, applications, materials, strength, finishes, inch and metric standards, and Mil-Spec products.

In Part 4, we shift our focus to the purchasing side of socket fasteners: DFARS compliance, certifications, domestic sourcing, cross-referencing and hard-to-find parts. We’ll explore finding the correct product(s) with the required compliance, documentation, and availability.

For aerospace, defense, government, and precision manufacturing applications, buying a socket fastener involves more than matching a part number. DFARS requirements, domestic sourcing, certifications, traceability, specifications, and lead times also need to be considered.

Yes. Many socket fastener are available with DFARS-compliant specialty metals from domestic or qualifying-country sources.

Requirements vary by part and application, so DFARS requirements should be identified at the RFQ stage.

Depending on the requirement, documentation may include:

  • Manufacturer Certificate of Conformance (CoC)
  • Material Test Reports (MTRs)
  • DFARS certification
  • Plating certification
  • Heat-treat certification
  • Lot or heat traceability

Hint: Specify certification requirements when requesting a quote so availability, pricing and lead time can be confirmed up front.

Yes. MF Supply stocks and sources inch, metric, commercial, aerospace and Mil-Spec socket fasteners in a wide range of sizes, materials and finishes.

MF Supply can supply domestic socket products (made in the USA) from sources such as Holo-Krome, American Sockets, previously known as Blue Devil, and our vast supply chain network.

Send us the part number, print or specification and we can confirm available domestic options.

Yes. We can help identify or cross-reference fasteners from:

  • OEM Part numbers or references
  • Prints
  • Descriptions with specifications
  • Mil-Spec callouts
  • Commercial catalog part numbers

When appropriate, we can also identify functional equivalents or alternate manufacturers that may improve availability, lead time, or price.

A backorder doesn’t necessarily mean you’re out of options.

MF Supply can review:

  • Alternate manufacturers
  • Domestic sources
  • Factory inventory
  • Functional equivalents
  • Commercial-to-Mil-Spec alternatives
  • DFARS-compliant options

Our team regularly helps buyers navigate availability, certifications, specifications, and lead time challenges for precision and aerospace fasteners.

Send us the part number.

MF Supply specializes in finding USA-made and DFARS-compliant alternatives to commercial catalog fasteners, including equivalents that may offer better availability, pricing or lead times.

Sourcing the right socket fastener means getting more than the correct part number or dimensions. Material, finish, specifications, compliance, documentation and availability all matter.

When the exact part isn’t available, buyers may have options, including alternate manufacturers, domestic or DFARS-compliant sources, functional equivalents, or Mil-Spec alternatives. For compliance-driven orders, buyers should identify documentation requirements early, including Certificates of Conformance, Material Test Reports, DFARS certifications, plating or heat treat certifications, and lot traceability. The key is to make sure any alternative still meets the application and documentation requirements.

Need an in-stock Mil-Spec part, a USA-made or DFARS-compliant option, or something your regular source can’t find? Send us the part number, quantity and requirements. We’ll help identify your best options for price, delivery, and documentation.

After all, “Finding the right screw for you” isn’t just our tagline. It’s what we do.

Top 27 Socket Fastener Questions & Expert Answers: Materials, Strength, Finishes & Inch vs. Metric Socket Screws (Part 3 of 4)

Welcome to our third installment of Socket Fastener FAQs. In Part 1 of our four-part series, we covered Socket Fastener Basics, including Common Types, Applications, Thread Fit, and Selection. In Part 2 of this series, we explored socket set screws, shoulder screws, socket fastener head styles, drive styles, and installation torque.

In Part 3, we dive into the differences between inch, metric, NAS and MS (Mil-Spec) socket fasteners standards, as well as the material and performance characteristics. Alloy steel, stainless steel, A286, and other specialty materials offer different combinations of strength, corrosion resistance, and temperature performance. Finishes, platings and passivation can also affect corrosion protection, lubrication, appearance, and even thread fit.

Let’s take socket head cap screws as an example. Their high-strength designs and commonly used Class 3A threads can make material selection, heat treatment, and plating particularly critical. Even a coating applied for corrosion protection can affect thread tolerances if its thickness is not properly accounted for.

Hence, understanding these differences can help engineers and buyers avoid specification mismatches and select the correct socket fastener for the application.

Socket fasteners are commonly available in:

  • Alloy Steel
  • 18-8 Stainless Steel
  • 316 Stainless Steel
  • A286 Stainless Steel

Less common materials include:

  • Brass
  • Inconel®
  • Monel®
  • Silicon Bronze
  • Titanium

Material selection depends on strength requirements, corrosion resistance, temperature exposure, and environmental conditions.

Alloy steel socket screws generally provide higher tensile strength and hardness, while stainless steel socket screws offer improved corrosion resistance. The correct material depends on the application’s environmental exposure, strength requirements, and performance expectations.

Socket head cap screws are commonly manufactured from heat-treated alloy steel and designed to achieve high tensile and yield strength while maintaining compact head dimensions and high torque capability.

Standard Alloy steel socket head cap screws commonly have a minimum tensile strength as follows:

  • 180,000 psi minimum (180 ksi) for diameters through 1/2″
  • 170,000 psi minimum (170 ksi) for diameters 5/8″ and larger

Common finishes and coatings include:

  • Black Oxide (through heat treatment)
  • Zinc Plating
  • Passivation
  • Plain Finish
  • Dry Film Lubricants
  • Cadmium Alternatives
  • Specialty Aerospace Coatings

Finish selection depends on corrosion resistance, lubrication, conductivity, appearance, and environmental exposure.

Yes. Because socket head cap screws commonly use a tight 3A thread fit, zinc plating or other coatings can affect thread tolerances. In some cases, plating buildup may alter the fit enough to interfere with assembly or mating components.

Often, zinc plating a standard alloy steel socket head cap screw changes the thread fit from 3A to a commercial nut fit.

If maintaining a specific thread fit is critical, it should be clearly specified on the purchase order so the manufacturer can account for plating thickness during production.

Taking socket cap screws again as an example, metric socket caps are available in multiple grades from 8.8, 10.9, 12.9. Standard alloy steel inch socket caps are generally not graded. Inch socket caps are commonly manufactured to ASME standards, while their metric counterparts are generally manufactured to ISO or DIN standards.

NAS (National Aerospace Standards) and MS (Military Standard) socket fasteners are aerospace and military-grade fasteners manufactured to strict dimensional, material, testing, and traceability requirements established by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) for critical applications.

Socket fastener selection involves more than dimensions alone. Material, strength, corrosion resistance, finish, coating, thread fit, and applicable standards can all affect performance.

Alloy steel is generally selected when strength and hardness are priorities, while stainless steel options such as 18-8 and 316 offer greater corrosion resistance. A286 and specialty materials such as Inconel®, Monel®, brass, silicon bronze, and titanium may be used for more demanding temperature, corrosion, or environmental requirements.

Finishes such as black oxide, zinc plating, passivation, dry film lubricants, and specialty aerospace coatings can provide different levels of corrosion protection, lubrication, conductivity, and environmental performance.

Plating requires particular attention, especially on socket head cap screws because their tight Class 3A thread fit can be affected by coating buildup. When thread fit is critical, plating requirements and thickness should be clearly specified.

Inch and metric socket screws also follow different strength and dimensional standards. Metric socket head cap screws commonly use strength classes such as 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9, while inch socket screws generally follow ASME standards and metric products typically follow ISO or DIN standards.

For aerospace and defense applications, NAS and MS socket fasteners add another layer of specification requirements, including defined dimensions, materials, testing, and traceability.

In Part 4, we’ll close the series with sourcing, compliance, and availability topics, including NAS and MS fasteners in greater detail, DFARS compliance, certifications and traceability, domestic sourcing, cross-referencing, hard-to-find parts, and DFARS alternatives to standard catalog socket products.

Mil-Spec DFARS!? What the heck is that?

Welcome to the second edition of our “What the heck is that” series, refreshed for 2023, where we discuss some of the unique fasteners and electronic hardware that manufacturers use in the design and assembly of their products. If you sell to the military either directly or indirectly, then you are probably aware of today’s topic:  “DFARS” and “Mil-spec fasteners”.

What does Mil-spec mean anyway?

Before we get into the nitty gritty of DFARS, let’s discuss what makes a “Mil-spec” fastener. Mil-spec is the informal name for the military standard the U.S. Department of Defense uses in the production of military equipment. For example, the MS24693C pictured above is a fastener produced according to strict military standards that are maintained by the DLA (Defense Logistics Agency).

Mil-spec fasteners look a lot like their civilian cousins, but, these little guys are made to a specific standard that defines in detail, the screw’s attributes, including: dimensions, tensile strength, hardness, threads, drive type, material qualities and plating, just to name a few.  Mil-spec fasteners are even traceable by lot to designated manufacturers.  The government maintains a list of factories and suppliers who are qualified to manufacture Mil-spec fasteners.  These suppliers have met all the government’s requirements and pass the highest quality control standards. This designation is called Qualified Suppliers List for Manufacturer’s [QSLM].

AKA – Also known as…..

Mil-spec fasteners are usually designated by an AN, MS, NAS or NASM prefix followed by a part number.  Each of these prefixes is an abbreviation: NAS stands for National Aerospace Standard and MS stands for Military Standard.  An example of one of the most common and popular Mil-spec machine screws is the MS24693C.  Its commercial equivalent is a Phillips Flat 100 degree Machine Screw in 300 series stainless steel.  Below, we’ll tell you more about this popular fellow.

Who uses Mil-spec Fasteners?

Mil-spec fasteners may be used by anyone manufacturing or servicing military equipment.  Often, the bill of materials calls for specific Mil-spec grade fasteners in accordance with a part number, drawing or procurement requirement.  Some of the most common uses of Mil-spec fasteners include aerospace, naval vessels and weapons systems.

Now, tell me about DFARS…

Almost a decade ago, the term “DFARS Compliant Material” came to the forefront for companies supplying parts and services to the government. The original Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) clause 252.225-7014 specified “A Preference for Domestic Specialty Metals.”  What that means in our world is that for fasteners to be DFARS compliant, the metal used to fabricate them must be melted or manufactured in the United States or a qualifying country.

Qualifying countries include: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Important Note:  DFARS only pertains to fasteners made from “specialty metals” including: stainless steel, high alloy steel like Grade-BD, or Grade 5 Chromium steel with high chromium content.

Visit the DPC website, section 252.225, to keep up to date with DFARs requirements, which were updated January 2023. Click here: https://www.acq.osd.mil/dpap/dars/dfars/html/current/252225.htm.

An example of a DFARS Mil-Spec Screw please!

As we’ve learned, the MS24693C is actually Phillips Flat 100 degree Machine screws in 300 series stainless steel.   The MS24693-C4 is a 4-40 x 3/8 Phillips Flat 100 Degree Machine Screw in 302 Stainless Steel, and it is one of the most widely used sizes.  Interestingly, the MS24693C superseded the AN662C series, so you might come across the AN662C on an older print of bill of materials.  Keep in mind, with any design or manufacturing decision, the reason for using a specific screw generally rests in the hands of engineering.

Features of the MS24693C

  • Strict military standards ensure performance and reliability
  • Made/melted in the USA or other DFARs-approved country
  • Materials and dimensions meet Federal standard FF-S-92
  • Inspected per Mil-I-45208
  • Full lot traceability, manufacturer’s certification and chemical and physical certification
  • Available in diameters from #0 through 1/4 inch in coarse and fine thread and various lengths

Lessons Learned

Considerations when purchasing MS24693C or other Mil-spec DFARs fasteners.

  1. Always ask for “full certifications”.  This includes part name, part description, date of manufacture, lot number, chemical composition of material, and treatment of material including plating or passivation directly from the manufacturer.
  2. When purchasing Specialty metal screws that qualify for DFARS, at point of purchase, make sure the screws are DFARS.  If you do not specifically ask for DFARS-compliant screws, you might receive screws that don’t meet the DFARS requirements, in which case, they won’t meet military standards.  We’ve learned this the hard way so hopefully you don’t have to!
