8. What are socket set screws used for?

Socket set screws, also known as grub screws or set screws, are headless screws designed to secure one component against another without using a nut. Unlike traditional screws that clamp two parts together, set screws hold components in position by applying pressure directly against a shaft or mating surface. 

Common applications include:

Because they are headless, socket set screws install flush with or below the surface, making them ideal where space is limited or a protruding head is undesirable.

10. What is a shoulder screw used for?

Shoulder screws feature a precision-ground, unthreaded shoulder that acts as a bearing surface while the threaded portion secures the fastener. They are comprised of 3 main parts: the head, the shoulder and the thread. They come in two basic categories, “Commercial” and “Precision”. 

Commercial Shoulder Screws, also known as shoulder bolts or stripper bolts, are made to inch standard ANSI ASME B18.8.2. The size range for the shoulder diameter is from ¼ to 2”. The thread class is 3A and the tolerance on the shoulder is +.005 /  -.005. 

Precision Shoulder screws are sometimes referred to as “tight tolerance” shoulder screws. They are not governed by any official ANSI or ASME standard, but are made to the OEM’s unique standard. The size range for the shoulder diameter is from 3/32 to ½.  The thread class is 2A and the tolerance on the shoulder diameter varies from +.000/-.001 to  -.0005 to -.0015 depending upon the manufacturer. 

Both commercial and precision shoulder screws are commonly used as:

Socket Head cap screws are made with a variety of head styles; each is designed to solve different assembly challenges.

13. What torque values should be used for socket fasteners?

There is no single torque value that applies to every socket fastener. Proper tightening torque depends on factors such as the fastener’s size, material, strength, thread condition, lubrication, coatings, and the design of the assembly.

Yet selecting the right socket fastener isn’t always as straightforward as matching a part number. Buyers, engineers, and purchasing professionals often need to evaluate head style, material, thread fit, strength, corrosion resistance, certifications, inventory availability, and whether a commercial, Mil-Spec, DFARS-compliant, or OEM brand is the best choice for their application.

4. What is the difference between a socket head cap screw and a standard hex cap screw?

A socket head cap screw has a cylindrical head with an internal hex socket drive, while a standard hex cap screw has an external six-sided head designed to be tightened with a wrench or socket. Because socket head cap screws use an internal drive, they require less side clearance during installation, making them a good choice for recessed, compact, or hard-to-access assemblies. They are also commonly manufactured to tighter tolerances and higher strength requirements than standard hex cap screws, depending on the material, grade, and specification. In general, standard hex cap screws use Class 2A external threads, while socket head cap screws are commonly made with tighter Class 3A threads for more precise fit and performance.

Unlike many commercial fasteners that use a standard 2A thread fit, socket fasteners are commonly manufactured with a tighter 3A thread fit. This provides improved thread engagement, alignment, clamp load consistency, and performance in critical assemblies requiring precision and reliability.
