In Part 3, we dive into the differences between inch, metric, NAS and MS (Mil-Spec) socket fasteners standards, as well as the material and performance characteristics. Alloy steel, stainless steel, A286, and other specialty materials offer different combinations of strength, corrosion resistance, and temperature performance. Finishes, platings and passivation can also affect corrosion protection, lubrication, appearance, and even thread fit.
Let’s take socket head cap screws as an example. Their high-strength designs and commonly used Class 3A threads can make material selection, heat treatment, and plating particularly critical. Even a coating applied for corrosion protection can affect thread tolerances if its thickness is not properly accounted for.
Hence, understanding these differences can help engineers and buyers avoid specification mismatches and select the correct socket fastener for the application.

14. What materials are socket fasteners available in?
Socket fasteners are commonly available in:
- Alloy Steel
- 18-8 Stainless Steel

Less common materials include:

- Titanium

15. What is the difference between alloy steel and stainless steel socket screws?
Alloy steel socket screws generally provide higher tensile strength and hardness, while stainless steel socket screws offer improved corrosion resistance. The correct material depends on the application’s environmental exposure, strength requirements, and performance expectations.
16. Why are socket head cap screws considered high-strength fasteners?
Socket head cap screws are commonly manufactured from heat-treated alloy steel and designed to achieve high tensile and yield strength while maintaining compact head dimensions and high torque capability.
Standard Alloy steel socket head cap screws commonly have a minimum tensile strength as follows:
- 180,000 psi minimum (180 ksi) for diameters through 1/2″
- 170,000 psi minimum (170 ksi) for diameters 5/8″ and larger

18. Are there special considerations when plating socket head cap screws?
Yes. Because socket head cap screws commonly use a tight 3A thread fit, zinc plating or other coatings can affect thread tolerances. In some cases, plating buildup may alter the fit enough to interfere with assembly or mating components.
Often, zinc plating a standard alloy steel socket head cap screw changes the thread fit from 3A to a commercial nut fit.
If maintaining a specific thread fit is critical, it should be clearly specified on the purchase order so the manufacturer can account for plating thickness during production.
19. What is the difference between inch and metric socket screws?
Taking socket cap screws again as an example, metric socket caps are available in multiple grades from 8.8, 10.9, 12.9. Standard alloy steel inch socket caps are generally not graded. Inch socket caps are commonly manufactured to ASME standards, while their metric counterparts are generally manufactured to ISO or DIN standards.

Alloy steel is generally selected when strength and hardness are priorities, while stainless steel options such as 18-8 and 316 offer greater corrosion resistance. A286 and specialty materials such as Inconel®, Monel®, brass, silicon bronze, and titanium may be used for more demanding temperature, corrosion, or environmental requirements.
Finishes such as black oxide, zinc plating, passivation, dry film lubricants, and specialty aerospace coatings can provide different levels of corrosion protection, lubrication, conductivity, and environmental performance.
Plating requires particular attention, especially on socket head cap screws because their tight Class 3A thread fit can be affected by coating buildup. When thread fit is critical, plating requirements and thickness should be clearly specified.
Inch and metric socket screws also follow different strength and dimensional standards. Metric socket head cap screws commonly use strength classes such as 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9, while inch socket screws generally follow ASME standards and metric products typically follow ISO or DIN standards.
